monster
Construction: I picked the little red devil monster because I had thought I could make it from an upside-down pinch pot. It honestly was a pretty fast build. the only thing I struggled with was the sizing of the eyes, I was going to add them on top but couldn't get it right so I carved them in. I like all the colors I picked and I'm very excited to see it when it's done firing. After firing, it turned out as expected.
Reflection: I love the monster that I picked, I don't think I would've picked another one. I think that it will turn out cute. I'm honestly just really worried that the kid isn't going to like it if it gets picked. I don't think I would've done anything differently other than the way I designed the mouth.
sgraffito
Construction: I rolled a slab and constructed it into a little cup, which is the same thing I'm doing for a unit 4 project. I found this way to be the easiest and the most affected. I made sure to push a little arch in the bottom to make a foot, and I added a handle. At first, I picked the Crimson or Fire red underglaze to do my sgraffito on, but I changed it to the brown redwood color and glazed the inside a dark blue.
Reflection: I had a lot of fun doing the construction and painting for this piece. I had the idea for a little Christmas winter house theme. I wanted to go Christmasy. I started with the red because I wanted to do red and green, but it was pink and threw me off. I wish I had kept my red and green idea, I think it would have turned out a lot better. If I were to do it again, I'd want to do light blues I think, and more color detail on the scraffito. Originally I was going to do a charcuterie board but it broke and I didn't like it anymore. Pictures are below.
coil building
Construction: The first couple of ideas I scrapped. I started with a slump mold bowl, then moved to the honeypot. I wasn't a fan of the big extruder, but I did like the little one. In between, I worked on other projects, but Paige and I got the idea to do a little matching sheep. I used an upside-down pinch pot and the mini extruder. I am going to have a black sheep and Paige's will be white. I also added a little flower to include a different type of coil that wasn't a swirl.
Reflection: I think that once this is done being glazed it will be super cute. I'm not the biggest fan of coil construction but if I were to do it again in the future, I'd probably just do what I did with this project and use the coil as decoration. I just hope my clay was wet enough because I didn't score and slip.
slab darted
Construction: This piece was my attempt at a darted cup. I later decided to have it as my scrapped project for this unit. I couldn't get the darting right and kept smoothing it out because I didn't like the pointyness of it. I had an idea to make it a bowl but the next class decided to just crush it.
Reflection: I'm sure I'll come back and try darted again in a later unit. I want to try some geometric-type mugs and maybe that will make me like darting a little more.
slab slump & relief revisited
Construction: To construct this piece, I started by rolling a slab. I decided to use a square plate as my mold. It was a little difficult at first because my clay was wet, but turned out fine as the class went on. My idea started as an ocean/starfish kind of theme but turned into a flower. The next class period I went in and painted, Now I'm waiting to glaze and finish the piece. I mixed the slump and relief (revisited) project because I didn't want my slump to be boring.
Reflection: I think that overall the piece went well, it isn't the best or my favorite. For my next slump mold, I want to do a different mold, maybe one of the bottles. I would like to plan out the design a little more, I didn't have much inspiration and just went with it. I do like how it looks like a Tangled theme a little. I wish I had ideas for carving on it, too.
